Ok Saturday morning there was a lot of head scratching and questions about the O rings on my rifle, here is the theory and where the idea came from. When I was in military school I saw our instructor (Msg. Cleo Melton) using rubber bands on a rifle while making several quite difficult shots when I asked hat was the bands for he said to tune the barrel frequency down so the resonance won’t affect the bullets flight path as much.
A few weeks ago I was at a friends house and while sitting on the deck I noticed the wind chimes had small O rings on the pipes, he said they were to tune the chimes to your liking .So after playing with them for ½ hour or so it all started making sense to me how a $0.10 O ring can have such a profound affect on the pitch and resonance in metal tubing i.e. a rifle barrel. So I got a handful of O rings and off to the range I went. I decided to try it and after a hour or so I figured it out and it worked .All I know for a fact is that the front set of rings can make or break the project, all the others are there for dampening and the front rings tune the barrel to the pitch you want. If you wish to try this idea I have enclosed a picture of them installed and a test target, my group size went down ¼ inch
And from a ragged 3 hole to a tight 1 hole just by tuning the front rings. Anyway if you want to try it get 8 O rings 1 size smaller than your barrel (Suhl barrel is 7/8’ so I used ¾”) a rubber handle screwdriver or nylon mallet to tap barrel to hear the resonance, put the rings on spaced equally from the stock to the muzzle I used a biz. Card to space the first 3 then the muzzle ring can be moved back and fourth to tune the frequency. Any more questions or instructions, help whatever just ask I will be more than happy to assist.
It worked good enough to bring my score up from the high 220’s low 230’s to 241 all in about 2 hours and $1, It is cheaper than the Deresonator slide on dampener and $200 cheaper than the Hoen tuner and works just as good and requires no adjustment after you tune it right where you want it. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me. “T”
