The Range
Reece Stewart, Sharon Stewart, James Day, and I attended the work session of Monday night’s Sheffield City Council Meeting. The final item on the agenda for that session was the economic development project that will impact our firing range facility. A golf course, resort hotel, marina, and residential development are all planned for the riverfront property. The speaker for the project management company stated that the shooting club will be asked to vacate the property at the time construction starts. He estimated that the shortest time frame for the start of said construction might be six months and the longest might be a year.
The city, the developers, and the development company still have to raise financing among other tasks before this construction begins.
In light of this news, the officers and directors of the club met last night (August 6th) and discussed the issue. A motion was made and voted down to cease all official club efforts to find an alternate range site until we actually receive “walking papers” (theory being that the rank and file would have to come together in one focused effort at that time and commit both money and labor to a range building project). So, there is still an alternate site committee headed up by Reece Stewart and they will do their best to keep the club abreast of possibilities.
Ladies’ Handgun Course
Lee Smith, Elaine Augustine, and Al Hausmann (among others) successfully completed a Ladies’ Handgun Course in July. Thanks to this team for their dedication and hard work. Elaine reports that many more women have expressed interest in future sessions. So, keep an eye on the club website for announcements about future dates and locations. www.NASACLUB.com
Sanctioned CMP Sporter Match
Dwight Pilkilton organized and managed our first sanctioned CMP Sporter Match in May. 18 scores were posted as two strings of shooters were put through their paces in the challenging 60 round three position event. One shooter and his wife traveled over from eastern Tennessee to attend as did a man and his grandson from Georgia. Too many friends and members helped with this event to list here. Our scores were posted at the national level. Well done!
National CMP Sporter Match
Due to our local success and growth with CMP Sporter, the officers and directors voted to rent a van to assist a CMP team from our club in its efforts to attend the CMP National Sporter Match at Camp Perry, Ohio on July 20th The team members paid for their own entry fees, gasoline, food, and lodging. The van was most appreciated. Four team members competed and Gold, Silver, and Bronze metals were brought home. The Civilian Marksmanship Program is a fine organization and they run a great match. There were over 300 shooters from across the nation firing in this event.
Friends of NRA Dinner and Auction
Reece Stewart reminds everyone to call him at 383-9533 and purchase tickets for the Friends of NRA Dinner and Auction. It is being held on August 21, 2008 at the Sheffield Recreation Center and it will start at 5:30 PM. There is a door prize and raffle tickets are for sale as well. Please support this worthy event.
