I talked to a club member that told me that he had pledged a $1000, but if we were going to Greenhill, he would not pay. I told him to check out the info on the property in Colbert Co. He said he would pay if we were getting land there.

David, that is why there is a $200 annual regular membership in place for the new club. New members and present members that passed on the $1,000 and $500 options can pay $200 a year and have the same rights and privileges as the escrow payees.
We set the $1000 and $500 memberships in place to raise the necessary funds for buying and building a new range. We would love to collect the total cost up front but if nothing else, the $100,000 goal would enable us to buy a site and get at least one range functional.

I understand his hesitation but all it is going to get him is missing out on the chance to buy a low cost membership in a really nice shooting club.

I have re-prented the newsletter below because some folks don't know how to navigate to the first page of this thread.
Sheffield Shooting August 6, 2012 by Danny Creasy
THE MEETING
Here was the agenda for the meeting:
AGENDA

• Minutes presented by Secretary, Ulus Farris
• Treasurer’s Report presented by Treasurer, Andrew Butler
• Present results of poll 1. 207 responses 2. 82 for $1,000 life memberships = $82,000 3. 48 for $500/$100 memberships = $24,000 4. 77 unwilling or unable
• Danny Creasy presents Green Hill property cost breakdown to demonstrate how the proposed project expenses escalate
• James Day reports on his prospective range site activities
• Danny Creasy reports on merger opportunities relative to the Florence Gun Club
• Open the floor for discussion and questions
• Present the leadership’s plan to fund a property acquisition: 1. Pay $1,000 or $500 at a local attorney’s office to be placed in escrow. 2. The attorney will present the member with a receipt. 3. The payment period will start on Tuesday, August 14th 4. The payment period will end one month later on Friday, September 14th 5. The attorney’s name and address will be available on the web site by Thursday, August 9, 2012. 6. Said paying members will receive a refund of their $1,000 or $500 payment, less a $25.00 attorney’s fee, if the club has not accumulated $100,000.00 by September 14, 2012 and/or located and purchased a new range site by September 14, 2013.
Please note that a $200 annual membership will be available when the new range becomes active. But, the $1,000 non-transferable lifetime membership option and the $500/$100 non-transferable option will only be available during this one month period. * Adjourn meeting
The details of the escrow process are still being worked out and as stated in the meeting agenda, they will be posted on this site by Thursday, August 9, 2012.
There will be no mailing relative to this process. The last mass mailing cost over $500 and only 207 members responded. So, the information will be posted here and at the range, on the bulletin board.
The meeting went very smoothly.
The 56 members in attendance understood the need to get the horse in front of the cart and raise the funds necessary to puchase and develop a suitable range property.
When discussed openly and after all the pros and cons were aired, the issue of the life membership being non-transferable was clear. A transferable life membership opens too many administrative pitfalls and liability issues.
Please don't assume that the Green Hill property will be the new range site. The club's leaders are still considering other options.
Some questions from the floor:
Will the new range still have the same guest policy? Yes, a member may bring unlimited family and up to two non-family members during the range 's hours of operations. But, keep in mind that all guests must stay on the same range as the member and the member must make sure that the guests comply with all range rules and policies.
Will the new range's rules allow high power rifle fire? Absolutely, and we hope to have a 300 or even 400 yard rifle range at the new facility. The issue as to the allowance of very powerful rounds such as the 50 BMG will be determined by the location, berm strength, and layout of the new range.
Do we have to get a permit from some state agency such as ADEM to build and start a new firing range? No, we called ADEM with that very question and they have responded. We do not have to get permission, approval, or a permit to build and start a new firing range. However, the club and its members could be held liable for any lead contamination that leaches into a water system and causes damage to the environment or harms individuals or their property.
UPDATE
A local attorney has agreed to handle our range project escrow:
Please pay your $1,000 lifetime memberships or your $500/$100 memberships at:
Randy Whitten Attorney At Law Wells Fargo Building 102 East Dr. Hicks Blvd. Florence, AL 35630
Mr. Whitten or his staff member will inform you how to make your check out (Randy D. Whitten Trust Account) and collect your name, mailing address, and phone number and provide you with a receipt.
By the way, he said it would be fine to bring your payments by before the previously stated August 14th date.

Have you given any thought to getting members to donate items and having an auction to raise money?

Have you given any thought to getting members to donate items and having an auction to raise money? We are not a charity or a church. It is simply not feasible. We are a sporting club. Besides who really wants to be in charge of such an event. NW Alabama is the tightest place in the free world. Just ask anybody that has tried to run a Friends of NRA event around here.

I tried to drop off my $1000 lifetime membership payment yesterday but the law office was locked up. No sign, no phone number, no schedule....nothing. Is the law office closed on Mondays?

No, but just like most lawyer's offices, they close from 12 to 1 for lunch everyday.
I just checked in with Angela at Whitten's office to get the latest total in the escrow. It is now at $41,500.00.

Depending on escrow collections, we plan to bid on the 20 acres off Gnat Pond Road in Muscle Shoals as soon as bidding opens (possibly in the next two weeks).
