SHEFFIELD SHOOTING
The official newsletter of the North Alabama Shooting Association, Inc.
Written by Danny Creasy on June 12, 2010
This final “stamp and paper” letter is being mailed to 471 current and former members.
After having their membership lapse last year, dozens of members defended their position to the officers and directors with the excuse that they never received a club newsletter for reasons such as these:
1. My wife opens the mail and she did not know what it was and she trashed it.
2. I opened the mail and did not realize what it was and I trashed it.
3. After describing the simple white paper tri-folded correspondence, the member would state that they probably thought it was junk mail and threw it away without opening it.
4. I moved.
An inordinate amount of time is spent dealing with these past due members each year. So, the administration is taking the following steps to insure that the members do their part to help the club run efficiently.
Every member is responsible for assertively confirming the time, place, and methodology for paying his or her annual club dues. There is an annual operations meeting held in November to discuss club issues, make motions, vote on club rules and policies, and elect the club’s officers and directors. The exact methodology for paying the dues can be found in the November or December club newsletter each year along with the dates, times, and locations of the key meetings.
The members can pay their dues by mailing them in starting in December (the instructions for mailing in dues will be in the December Newsletter) or attending either the January or the February Key Meetings. If renewing by mail, the members new range key and membership card will be mailed back to them no earlier than the first day following the January Key Meeting. If paying at one of the two key meetings, they will receive their new key and membership card at the Key Meeting.
The range locks are changed the evening of the January Key Meeting to accept only the new key. Thus, the mail in members will be effectively locked out for at least a few days and a member waiting to pay at the February Key Meeting will be locked out for at least a month. If a member’s dues payment has not been received by mail or in person by the date of the February key meeting, then his or her membership is considered lapsed and he or she will need to re-apply for membership and be subject to what ever prospective member policy is in place at the time.
The club newsletter will no longer be mailed – as in paper and stamp mail. A single mailing like the one you are hopefully holding in your hand at this moment costs the club about $300 to print and mail. The most recent newsletter (along with several past ones) can be located in the NEWSLETTER forum of the club forums at www.nasaclub.com . We understand that some folks do not use computers or even own one. If that is your situation, we ask that you take a few moments every other month or at least annually in December to read a hard copy of the most recent Newsletter that I will keep posted on the bulletin board located at the range (the pistol range specifically).
Important dates such as meetings and match schedules will be listed on the Newsletter at the range, the NASACLUB forums calendar (simply left click the word “calendar” at the top of the website), and the Newsletter that is posted in the “Newsletter” forum of the club’s forums board.
Here is the basic match schedule for the rest of the year:
First Saturday Morning – 50/25 Sporter
Second Saturday Morning – 25/25 Pistol
Third Saturday Morning – Sanctioned USBR
Third Sunday Afternoon – Defensive Pistol Match (June 27th due to Father's Day on 20th)
Fourth Saturday Morning – CMP Sporter
Fifth Saturday Morning (occurs about once a quarter) – Rimfire Raptor
Tony and Dwight will give us plenty of notice for State, Regional, and National Matches. Just check the Newsletter, club forums, and club forum calendar periodically. And, don’t forget the news fader at the top of the club forums.
For details and descriptions of these matches, please visit the various match forums at NASACLUB or Dwight Pilkilton’s extensive rimfire forum located at www.rimfireshooting.com .
YOUTH MARKSMANSHIP PROGRAM
Reece Stewart applied for and received a sizeable grant from the Friends of the NRA for the purpose of starting a youth program at our range. Half a dozen stalwart individuals have spent many hours this week completing their firearms instructor licensing to enable them to administer this and other shooting programs at our facility. A big thanks to all of you.
The next step will be drawing a base of young shooters to undertake these programs. Do you know of a mature and well disciplined youngster that would enjoy and benefit from such a program? Check the board in a few weeks for the dates and times of organizational meetings.
COWBOY MATCHES IN SHEFFIELD
The club has given the green light to one of our new members to hold Cowboy Action Shootng Matches at the range on a regular basis. Check the board in coming weeks for the details, dates, and times of these matches.
REMEMBER – THIS IS THE LAST CLUB NEWSLETTER BEING SENT VIA THE U. S. POSTAL SERVICE
MARK YOUR CALENDARS TO CHECK THE SOURCES NOTED ABOVE FOR THE MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL PROCESS (DECEMBER)
PERSONALLY, I PLAN TO MAKE A MOTION AT THE ANNUAL NOVEMBER OPERATIONAL MEETING TO ABANDON THE SINGLE YEAR $50 MEMBERSHIP AND CHANGE TO A $100 THREE YEAR MEMBERSHIP. TALK ABOUT SAVING TIME, ENERGY, AND MONEY! BE THERE TO VOICE YOUR OPINION AND VOTE YOUR MIND.
