SHEFFIELD SHOOTING
BY DANNY CREASY
NOVEMBER 17, 2010
Annual Operations and Administration Meeting
The meeting was held on Tuesday, November the 16th, and here is what transpired:
The Treasurer's report indicated that the club has approximately $23,000 on hand and we anticipate the collection of over $18,000 in dues within the next three months.
A motion was passed to accept a bid of just under $2,500 for berm modifications.
James Day was reelected to a three year term as club director and Willie Rhodes was reelected to a one year term as club director.
A motion was passed to terminate the phone service at the range.
A motion was rejected to change the membership renewal cycle from one year to three years (a single payment of $100 for three years instead of $50 per year).
There was a general discussion of safety issues and some problems will be highlighted below.
A plan for 2011 dues collection and membership induction was created and can be found below.
Safety Issues
Reece Stewart has reported numerous instances of members shooting at targets placed far from the downrange berm.
Two instances have been reported of shooters being photographed while firing by an individual standing forward of their firearms' muzzles.
Here are the club rules that these actions violate:
2. Watch that muzzle!!!! Always keep control of the muzzle. Do not sweep yourself or anyone else with your muzzle. When firing, the muzzle must always be pointed downrange (use the 180 degree rule). Behind the firing lines, take what action is necessary to prevent your muzzle from pointing at anyone.
19. ALL targets must be placed within 10 feet of the berm. DO NOT place targets at short ranges (25, 50, or 75 yards) and shoot. If you need to shoot at a shorter distance place target at berm and move down range to the appropriate distance.
Please note that match photographers have made "up-range" photos but these were made with a range officer present insuring that the rifle was cleared and had a chamber flag inserted. And, the 25/25 Pistol and Rapidfire Rimfire Matches are fired at an intermediate distance but this exception was approved by the officers and board in 2008 due to the design of the target racks insuring that missed shots pass into the berm safely.
2011 Renewal Process
The present members must pay their dues ($50) by February 1st or risk losing their membership in the club. The dues can be paid by mail (it must be in the club P.O. Box by February 1st) or by attending one of two key meetings and paying in person. The club leaders strongly recommend paying in person if at all possible.
If paying by mail, the members must enclose a copy of their 2010 club membership card, a check or money order payable to NASA, Inc., and the typed or printed address they wish their 2011 key and card mailed to. The club's mailing address is P. O. Box 3565, Florence, Alabama 35630.
If paying in person, bring your 2010 key and club membership card to the Sheffield Recreation Center between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM on either January 4th or February 1st. One can pay with cash, a check, or money order. They will leave with their 2011 key and card in hand.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE: The club leadership is going to process the mailed membership renewals twice. Once at the end of the January 4th meeting and again at the end of the February 1st meeting. James Day will change the range locks on January 4th. So, a mail in member will be locked out of the range for at least three days (received by 1-4-11) or 34 days (received by 2-1-11). Of course, a member that waits until the February 1st Key Meeting to pay in person will be locked out of the range from January 4th to February 1st.
At the end of the February 1st Key Meeting, the 2010 members with unpaid dues will be removed from the club roster and their slots will be open to prospective members on the waiting list. The waiting list will open on December 1, 2010 and the pdf application will be turned on again on the club's forum board. Prospective members can print the application, complete it, sign it, and send it in to the club p. o. box (above). The new applications must be in the club p. o. box by February 1st. Empty slots will be awarded based on the dates the new applications were received. The club's leaders will call the prospective candidates and notify them of their interview time. On Saturday, March 26th, the new members will be processed from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. They will be interviewed at the Rec Ctr and then sent to the range for a safety briefing and dues payment.

Please check the club forum board for announcements of match cancellations (due to weather) on the morning of the relevant match.
What is P Dog Sniper? Bring any rifle chambered for the .22 long rifle cartridge (that's any weight, any safe trigger, any scope, and any action style) and find out. It will not be a speed match (I plan to single load) but you must use a bi-pod ($30 at WalMart) and it will be fired from prone on the 100 yard range. Details later.
Dwight Pilkilton announced that the CMP Sporter Matches will resume in April.
