RANGE RULES
NORTH ALABAMA SHOOTING ASSOCIATION, INC
1. Treat all guns as if they are loaded
2. Watch that muzzle!!!! Always keep control of the muzzle. Do not sweep yourself or anyone else with your muzzle. When firing, the muzzle must always be pointed downrange (use the 180 degree rule). Behind the firing lines, take what action is necessary to prevent your muzzle from pointing at anyone.
3. Check barrel and chamber for obstructions.
4. Be sure of your target and backstop.
5. All firearms not in use should be placed in the racks or laid down on the tables or benches with actions open.
6. This is a COLD RANGE!!! All guns are to be unloaded unless on the firingline.
7. There are specific rules relevant to our various competitive matches. During matches DO NOT load your firearm until instructed to do so by the range officer. Furthermore, we suggest that a first time match participant not even remove his or her firearm from the vehicle until he or she has checked in with the range officer in charge of the match.
8. The person who is at the firing line first controls that range. THIS SHOULD BE DONE WITH A SENSE OF COMMON COURTESY. Let other shooters put up targets or check targets if they need to.
9. NEVER give a firearm to another person unless it is unloaded and the action is open. When you are handed a firearm ALWAYS check to see that it is unloaded and safe.
10. NEVER go in front of the firing line until all shooting has stopped and all firearms are made safe and range has been declared ALL CLEAR.
11. At the command of CEASE FIRE all shooting is stopped immediately. If you observe an unsafe action you must command CEASE FIRE and correct the action.
12. NO dry firing behind the firing line.
13. There will be no horseplay on the range at any time.
14. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ALLOWED!!! Failure to obey this rule will be cause for immediate dismissal from NASA. NO EXCEPTIONS. NO illegal drugs or intoxicated persons are to be on the range.
15. Pickup or sweep off fired brass and shotgun shells. Remove used paper targets and dispose of them properly.
16. The shooting hours for Monday through Saturday are 8:00 AM to sunset. The shooting hours for Sunday are 12:00 noon to sunset.
17. All persons on the range MUST wear eye and ear protection. This includes spectators. The eye protection is optional for official NASA, Inc. rimfire matches only.
18. This is not a gravel pit; NO SHOOTING of cans, bottles, cinder blocks or any type of trash is permitted.
19. All steel targets are to be shot with lead bullets only. Steel targets pose a risk of bullet ricochet. DO NOT shoot steel at less than 15 yards. The only waiver of this rule is for the any competitive matches held under the guidance of match range officers.
20. ALL targets must be placed within 10 feet of the berm. DO NOT place targets at short ranges (25, 50, or 75 yards) and shoot. If you need to shoot at a shorter distance place target at berm and move down range to the appropriate distance. THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF ANY OTHER SHOOTERS ON THE RANGE AND WHEN NO SHOOTING IS GOING ON AT LONGER DISTANCES.
21. NO MORE than 2 non-family guests per member at the range. YOU are responsible for your guest(s). DO NOT bring more guests than you can control and watch out for.
22. Family members may come to the range with members but you may not let family members use your key. NO family members are allowed on the range unless the member is with them. NON-MEMBERS are to stay on the same range (rifle range, pistol range, etc.) as the member who brought them.
23. NO member shall loan or give a key to any non member, this includes spouses, children, friends, etc.
24. Make sure that any club equipment used by you or your party are returned to the appropriate place and properly secured.
25. It is required that you lock the gate behind you when you are at the range. The gate may be left open during matches. IF YOU ARE THE LAST ONE LEAVING THE RANGE, LOCK THE GATE.
26. All shooters must wear N.A.S.A. ID cards when at the range or have their ID card clearly displayed on his or her range bag.
27. With the exception of official work days, climbing on any of the earthen berms is prohibited. Children are especially vulnerable to injury from climbing on the berms and hillsides. Rattlesnakes, coyotes, ferrell pigs, and the like occupy the area. Furthermore, we have a large piece of ground – 29 acres – and it will be hazardous for a member or their guest to go roaming about the grounds. The members need to stay on the shooting ranges. It is only fair that a shooter can assume that that all NASA members are accounted for on the ranges and not out roaming in the woods with a likelihood of wandering into the line of fire. This is especially significant given that we have a 200 yard rifle range.
28. We are not a hunting club. Hunting is prohibited on the NASA, Inc. grounds.
29. We have residential and business neighbors nearby. Sound is an issue. Of course firearms make noise, loud noise, but there are some steps we can take to be a better neighbor.
a. The following long range rounds are prohibited: .50 BMG, .408 Chey Tac, .375 Chey Tac, .338-.375 Weatherby, .338 RUM, and .338 Lapua. This list may be edited in the future.
b. Magazine dumping is discouraged. Rapidfire shooting should be restricted to reasonable function testing, self-defense practice, and supervised competitions. Fully automatic fire is prohibited.
30. Aerial target practice with shotguns may only be conducted in the designated area.
