NRA Light Rifle We will shoot a trial match of the NRA Light Rifle on July 28th. This match is designed to appeal to the largest cross section of shooters possible due to its flexibility in how the match may be shot. Rifle rules are simple, Sporter Rifles weighing 8.5 pounds or less, this is total weight including telescopic sights if used. Trigger weight is 2 pounds or higher, however this is a non sanctioned test match so “shoot what you brung” as long as it is a safe firearm. Any “ND’s” or Negligent Discharges will DQ you from the match due to safety issues. Any type of action may be used such as Bolt, Slide, Semi-Auto, Single Shot etc. Open sights will not compete with Telescopic sights except in the case of aperture sights. Here is how the match may be shot. Bench Rest, No rear bag only a front rest may be used. Bi-Pods will be in this category. Prone (slings are allowed) Offhand 3 Position (slings are allowed) You will have 20 minutes to shoot your 4 Bulls eyes with unlimited sighters during this period. Scoring will be 5 fired shots at each bull. Each Target or “card” will be a complete match so no target changing will take place once you shoot. You may shoot in more than 1 category, such as Bench Rest and Prone or any combination. Different categories will not compete against each other. No limit on what type of ammo may be used. So what does this all mean ? Simply show up with your favorite 22 Rimfire Sporter and ammo and pick how you would like to shoot the match. We have the Official targets and will provide them at the match. There will be no charge for this event. Match will start at 9:00 A.M. gate will be open at 8:00 A.M. I look foreword to seeing you there ! Sincerely Dwight Pilkilton

Dwight, I assume that if one selects BR, prone, or offhand then they will fire all 20 rounds in their selected position. But, on the 3 position option, how does the round count divide up? 5 prone, 5 sitting, and 10 offhand? Just wondering

Since I have no guidelines on this from the NRA , I have to go with a judgment call. 10 Prone, 5 Sitting, 5 Offhand.

Dwight, check out this info sheet from the NRA: www.nrahq.org/education/training/marksmanship/light_rifle.aspWhat do you think of going with the following? BR = 200 points (20 shots) Paper target layout: .............. sighter bull five shots ............. five shots five shots ............ five shots Prone and three position = 100 (10 shots) and 300 (30 shots) Paper target layout: ................. sighter bull Prone Match .............. Prone 3 P (10 shots) .............. (10 shots) Sitting 3 P ............. Offhand 3 P (10 shots) ............. (10 shots)

Or maybe flip flop that firing order on the prone/3P target to enable folks to shoot the offhand first. Wouldn't be as tired for the most difficult stage.

Well, our first NRA Light Rifle Match is history. We had eight shooters: Six shot all three events. Nice mix of rifles and ages. Not too hot (for July in Alabama) and quite windy. The breeze felt good but it sure played with the little projectiles. Here are the results:
Bench Rest
Danny Creasy 200-17X (Anschutz 1710)
Willie Rhodes 200-10X (CZ American)
Paul Enlow 196-5X (Marlin 25MN)
Dwight Pilkilton 196-5X (CZ American)
David King 188-4X (Ruger 10-22)
Jay Holman 187-6X (Ruger 10-22)
Chelsea Torbert 142-0X (Biathlon Basic)
Richard Enlow 74-3x (cross shooting penalty - bummer) (CZ American)
Prone Only
Danny Creasy 96-1X
Richard Enlow 95-3X
Paul Enlow 94-4X
Dwight Pilkilton 92-3X
Jay Holman 92-2X
Chelsea Torbert 91-0X
David King 89-1X
3 Position (Prone, Sitting, and Offhand)
Jay Holman 276-8X
Dwight Pilkilton 255-7X
Danny Creasy 244-2X
Richard Enlow 234-3X

That's a tougher target than the one in CMP Sporter.

Great fun and tough shooting. Danny gave up next to nothing in that BR Score...it would be hard to beat a perfect 200 with 17 of the 20 shots being a X. I thought I would repost the scores with classifications according to the NRA Guidelines.
