Hello
Today is Thursday 09/16 and I have just come home from our range. There is a problem with the gate. It came off its lower hinge when I tried to open it. The hinge on the post is just a curved very large lag bolt that is turned upward at a 90 degree angle and is secured in placed with a large hex nut. Apparently the wood of the post has shrunk and the hinge/lag bolt is now so loose it can be turned by hand.
I was able to open it and close the gate but the pressure on the upper hinge could cause it to break at some time.
I could not put the gate back on the lower hinge because it is too heavy. There needs to be at least two strong people, one on each side of the gate, to hold up the gate so it can be set back on the hinge thing. Also, someone should have a crescent wrench of the correct size ( perhaps two, one for each side of the post ) to tighten the nuts that hold the hinge in place.
I will call our club president and give him the details but if you are going to the range please be careful of the gate.
Also, if you should fix it please post a reply on this thread.
Thanks
Thomas W. McCord

Thanks Thomas. We will take care of this at our Saturday rimfire benchrest match.

Tom , thank you for letting us know. I got the message but my phone garbled it so badly I couldn't tell what was going on.

It actually fell on me while opening at the mid-week. I got the younger McCabe neighbor to help put it back on it's hinges. The monkey wrench I had in the car was not big enough to fit the nuts. I hand tightened it and thought I would bring a proper wrench on Saturday. I ended up having a conflict and could not attend the match. Thanks for taking care of it Bill.

I checked it out on Saturday and it looked and acted fine so didn't do anything further. I will bring some bigger wrenches on Wednesday and see whether anything needs tightening.
Cheers
