So the wife and i are just about done with NJ. We are looking to take our family south and as we are Tide fans we thought AL would be an interesting move. so we are trying to get down there maybe in November to take a look. We are looking into outside of the Huntsville area (as I'm in the tech field), prob western side (madison etc). But being a shooter, mainly sport USPSA, rimfire multigun etc. i thought it would be interesting to get a few places to look at while we are down there. but i had a couple of questions: (remember I'm from NJ, so these may be stupid questions near you but we are super restrictive up here) * what are some ranges to go to indoor/outdoor (prefer) * at ranges in AL, is steel ok to use, just paper?? * What ranges in that area hold idea/uspsa/rimfire events (not looking for just state matches, but friendly level 1 local matches) * what are the laws about shooting on ones property (maybe links for info). And yes i understand if i can see my neighbors house i can't shoot. * Are there towns/counties that you can recommend that are more "shooter" friendly than others?
Shooting isn't the reason for the move, but i figure if I'm going to move i might as well make my hobby as convenient as possible if anyones got any general info/advice that would be great and appreciated thanks Vinnie - ROLL TIDE!

Larry's Pistol & Pawn in Huntsville has a conventional lane rental indoor range. Last Resort Guns in Madison does too, but also holds indoor IPSC, 3 Gun, and house rules Tactical shoots. Membership or daily basis. lastresortguns.com/Strategic Edge is a predominantly rifle range near Chapel Hill, TN but they do have pistol bays. Membership basis. www.strategicedge.us/gun-rangeRocket City Practical Shooters holds USPSA, IDPA, and 3GN matches at Cavern Cove near Woodville. There are also Rimfire Challenge and SASS facilities on Uncle Frank's property there. See more on Shootability at s334465775.onlinehome.us/forums/ Get on there, there is a new shooter introduction forum and discussion of shooting in most areas around North Alabama and Middle Tennessee. Hartselle Gun Club shoots IDPA. Information on Shootability. For a little more travel (worth it to me from Florence) you can go to Brock's Gap in Hoover (Birmingham south) and get USPSA, IDPA, Practical/Tactical 2 or 3 gun or carbine, a .22 Sniper Match to 200 yards, SASS, and a host of other events. A membership club if you wish to shoot outside scheduled events, but I do not know their status on admittance or waiting list. www.brocksgap.com/main/monthly-matches/ Middle Tennessee Shooters near Manchester has three gun, IDPA, and outlaw pistol shoots. www.brocksgap.com/main/monthly-matches/The new CMP Park near Talladega - just down the road from the Speedway, in fact - has about any sort of shooting you can imagine, rifle, pistol, shotgun. thecmp.org/competitions/talladega-marksmanship-park/There are fish and game department ranges, the nearest at Swan Creek. You may shoot on your own property outside city limits. Most towns have ordnances against backyard shooting. Some of those involve a bit of driving but might be worth your time. I shoot mostly IDPA but a bit of BPCR and have done F class, and I can shoot something every weekend. My home range is the North Alabama Shooting Association, now located at Crooked Oak south of Tuscumbia. IDPA, USPSA, 3GN, assorted rimfire events. Something most Saturdays and Sunday afternoons.
