While waiting I was going over some of the other scores and the young little GA. 4H Team that shot with us is making their mark, one of the girls is leading the Womens and 4H Classes.

We took a van up to Perry (thanks to NASA, Inc.) with eight shooters from the Shoals area (North Alabama Shooting Association, Inc.) on Friday. Our crew consisted of Dwight Pilkilton (club president and my long time shooting friend), David King, Jay Holman, Chelsea Torbert (our only lady away team member), Andrew Butler, John Butler, Richard Enlow, and Danny Creasy (myself). We pre-registered on Saturday and caught the briefing. Four went last year and four were first timers. We shoot the match monthly at our club's range in Sheffield, Alabama. So, the rule changes concerning loaded detachable box magazines and the pre-prep time warning were a bit disconcerting. But, everybody got it out of their systems after a brief gripe session. We had a nice meal and got a good night's sleep at the Waterfowl Lodge.

My story: I shot in relays two (open sights) and four (scoped). Even before I shot in the second relay, T class scores of 593 and 589 were posted and an O class score of 584 had been delivered by the good Sgt. So, I knew I had to shoot my best to be close to those scores. My strategy was to take almost every second of the 30 second rapid fire strings to eliminate my usual hand full of nines and couple of eights that I throw in the fast shooting strings.

Well, it worked for me in O Class and I shot my personal best ever with a 571-12X.

T Class in Relay 4 was another matter. I seemed to have a handle on the winds from prone and sitting and was quite pleased with a 100, 99, and 98 in the first three stages. My timing in the rapid fire strings was working but I was finishing right at the "STOP" command. I mean right at it. Well, in the second five shot run of Rapid Fire Sitting, it caught up to me. I had just fired number four and realized the Jiffy Pop sound of firing on the line had stopped. I slapped the bolt up, back, forward, and down on my CZ American and was bringing my finger back to the trigger when Dwayne said "STOP". I sighed and slowly ejected the live round as the realization of 10 points left lying on the table sank in.

I tried to psych myself up for the two remaining offhand stages by reminding myself that I could still carry home two Gold metals with my normally solid offhand shooting. As Gary had mentioned in Satuday's briefing, the winds for Sunday were forecast for 20 to 25 miles per hour and that the big challenge would be trying to hold the rifle steady during offhand shooting. He was right. Unlike the narrow profile of the open sighted CZ 452 FS used in my earlier O Class relay, the big Sightron HBR II 6 X 42 on my American worked like a sail. Varied right pressure had to be applied to the rifle to counter the gusty winds from the left. I was simply not prepared for that challenge. Those were two of the worst offhand scores that I have ever posted (96 and 93). 573-17X - Silver. But, I must say that I was "going for it" with the slower but risky rapid fire shooting and simply crashed and burned. As usual, I learned some lessons. If one pushes the clock, one must watch the clock and as my buddy Jay said on the way home yesterday, "Everytime there is a storm front blowing in this year, I am going to grab my rifle and head to the range to practice offhand shooting in the wind". Good advice Jay. I should do the same.


Moving on: Congrats to David King for shooting that nice 580-13X T Class score for the team.

It was great seeing so many of our online CMP Sporter friends in person. It is one of the best parts of the trip for us each year.

I wasn't asleep, I was concentrating! The Perry trip was truly a memorable experience, due mainly to the members of our club I had the pleasure to go there with. The steady and calming influence of Danny and Dwight, and the fact that John and Andrew had been there before gave the rest of us plenty of answers to questions we had and allowed us to relax and not sweat the small stuff. I could not have had a better time with a better group of people. Thanks to all of you, and to the club for helping out, and hopefully we will all get to do it again next year.

Wow , the way that picture is taken it looks like the targets are 5 feet in front of us, when in fact this was the most difficult part of the match due to the extreme wind.
