Nothing but Bad News….Sorry
A club officer was told that in 2 weeks there would be an announcement to the public that a Golf Course would be built on the property that the club resides on along with a large development on the old Carter Oil Company property. We have herd strong rumors of this in the past, this seems substantial to me. This is the reason I am posting and emailing this to all I can contact in our Club. If you know anyone or anything that might help our club please post it on the Club board and or call one of the officers.

Well to start im a kinda sorta , well a bad golfer . The only thing I like to do with golf balls is shoot them with a .22, fun targets. I think if this happens and it’s up to the city Gov. we need to pull a NRA style attack and band together (peacefully) and show up in mass to the city council meeting and express our concerns. The last thing north Alabama needs is another small ball course next to a scrap yard. After all this is small town Alabama politics, in this case it can work in our favor. Some one reading this IS, knows, knows some one who does know someone, that can feel this out and help us in keeping our (and police, 4h,military personnel ect.) range right where it is. First I get a bad sight in for my wife’s pistol, my Thompson wouldn’t go back to battery and now this, truly no good news, bad day all but going to the range and getting outside for a bit .I’m up for about any thing, open to suggestion, anything I can do let me know I know a few people that might be able to say a thing or two on our behalf from the law enforcement community, as well as the guys in the club that are in law enforcement at the city council meeting. It can’t hurt to try and get the golf course shot down (pardon the pun), and win another victory for shooters rights and shooting lands. This range is a very valuable asset to the city and various other organizations not to mention all the firearms and ammo. Taxes were paying and safety we're teaching our kids and friends. Like I said i'm ready to do whatever to keep the range open, I hadn’t waited for years to get in and now it close down because a golf course.

well we've known this was coming for some time now...we have a good healthy bank account we just need to find something we can buy or lease apropriate for our uses. Kind of a shame after we finally get the range just about the way we wanted it (such is life) For what it's worth while the city certainly isn't going to screw up the deals it has in the works (golf course, restraunt, marina ect) for a range and 250 people's desire to plink. To be pragmatic about it...I'd like to suggest that if all we where allowed to shoot was limited to rimfire only I'd still fork over $50 a year for that. While they are not going to allow high power rifles and handgun fire off the edge of their little project I could see a rimfire course being OK...especially if they installed some highway style sound buffers on the one side of our city property we use. That's about the only shooting I could see anyone alowing that close to a "relaxation spot" We might possibly sell that to the city especially with the NRA 4H/youth shoots ect. We have contacts at the paper I think we could get a little help from the local media explaining why a rimfire only range would be a comparatively quiet and perfectly safe neighbor...possibly with some pictures of cute kids learning how to shoot safely. Just an idea. I've voiced this opinion to several members and most all have agreed they'd still drop $50 a year for rimfire only as that's what most of us shoot more than anything else anyway...and we can always add an additional facillity for long gun and handgun use (prefferably with 200 and 300 yard lanes unlike the current limited range) Whatever additional cost runs I'd pay that to even if it was another $50 a year...that's still pretty reasonable all things considered for even a moderately serious hobbyist. It would certainly keep the SKS and AR-15 brass off the rimfire or pistol ranges nicely-LOL PS-Also our sound buffer line would actually cut down on noise from the treatment plant as well in addition...which could even offer additional separation and insentive to the city if we paid for them. I think it would work it would just be a matter of salesmanship on our part. Just an idea.

I would be all for a rimfire range, not sure the city would though.

Between the endangered species Act, Environmentyal concerns created by years of Sheffield garbage buried next door and clean-up costs of heavy metals contamination (lead), a good defense could be launched to leave the range property and the old dump intact. EPA and ADEM will have to issue permits based on core drillings, etc.

EPA and ADEM will have to issue permits based on core drillings, etc. having been quite involved with the national speleological society in years past; and, having watched certain properties considered for "political" development in the Florence area over the last few years i would tend to agree the most likely form of defense (strong offense) would be the EPA and ADEM approach. just my 2cents. :-)
